Downhill skiing

Alpine skiing is an energy-intensive sport. This is not only due to the intensity of the sport, but also to the metabolic adaptation required in the high mountains, at low temperatures. Skiing also requires a lot of effort not directly related to exercise, such as transporting equipment.
It is no coincidence that the mountain diet includes desserts rich in chocolate or cream, animal meat and fats such as butter. Skiing is divided into several downhill disciplines: slalom, giant slalom, free and cross-country.

Recent studies (Fulco 2005) confirm that carbohydrate supplementation improves performance at altitude. In alpine skiing, training can last up to 2 hours (hours of activity beyond the approaches to the lifts in the cold, setting up the courses, etc.), and supplementation of up to 90g of carbohydrates per hour is indicated. Liquid, gel and bar supplements are the only viable solution on the slopes beyond the hut stop or refreshments.

Isotonic gels are a good choice because of the higher degree of hydration, while ATP BOOSTER should be the choice before a single descent (a descent lasts just a few minutes, but is very intense). While the uphill periods should be used for drinking flasks prepared with Hydro or Nitred to rehydrate.

Cross-Country Skiing

The advice of

Long cross-country skiing is an activity with a huge energy expenditure. The ability of cross-country skiers to rehydrate is remarkable. The useful time, apart from refreshments, is during short descents, when skiers can stop pushing with their poles and drink or take a gel. The approach in cross-country skiing should therefore be similar to that of long-distance running, with ample rehydration (the dry mountain climate causes more fluids to be lost and the sun can be strong on the skin) and cyclic carbohydrate consumption through gels, ATP BOOSTER or energy bars.
