Nitric oxide: supplements and nutrition

The quest for better blood flow to the muscles (resulting in better oxygenation, nutrient supply etc.) is the goal of any sportsman. Nitric oxide plays a fundamental role, and to this end, one looks for a diet and supplements that can increase its presence in the blood.
Nitric oxide can act on mitochondrial function at different levels. Due to its vasodilating properties, it regulates blood flow to the tissues; thus, indirectly, it provides respiratory substrates to the mitochondria and redistributes the heat generated by mitochondrial respiration.
In the body, nitric oxide synthesis is a (fundamental) product of NO synthase, the process of breaking down and synthesising the essential amino acid arginine (through the use of citrulline etc.), via the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) group of enzymes.

What to eat and what supplements to improve nitric oxide levels.

The common dietary strategy is to increase consumption of leafy vegetables containing natural nitrates; while arginine and citrulline can be found in nuts, pumpkin and lentils. The consumption one needs to make to experience their benefits is, however, quite high.
